On November 25th, the first ASEAN-ROK Culture Innovation Summit was held in the Busan Exhibition Hall to showcase the growing influence of Korean culture throughout the world and opening up opportunities for major companies to ensure its success. Several distinguished guests and speakers attended the event, including Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, French director Pierre Coffin, as well as Brian Chow, the CEO of Idea Music Entertainment Group.
One of the keynote speakers of the event was the CEO of Big Hit Entertainment, Bang Si-Hyuk, where he explained how BTS was able to grow into the face of kpop and The Beatles' equivalent of the Youtube generation. Bang explained that one of reasons that media is so widespread today is due to the internet and its ability to quickly share and release new content constantly. For that reason, BTS has been able to thrive through this environment and despite the group's humble origins, it has grown to be relatable to audiences worldwide, thus the groups being compared to The Beatles. "It's because they carry evocative and bold messages towards the era and the generation...all contents are forms of expression, what's important is how universal it can ring," he explained.
To end the talk, he stressed the importance of investing in creators that express ideas and views that are contemporary and create enthusiasm with their viewers. In that way, new advances in technology that would affect new generations of viewers would be done with creators that actively want to better the world we live in. The full talk can be viewed above.
