Seven tech CEOs were asked to identify the top marketing trends for 2020. Leore Avidar, CEO of Lob, said that direct-to-customer companies will abandon email as their primary customer communication channel. With social media platforms becoming increasingly expensive, brands will have to find alternative marketing strategies to modernize traditional engagement approaches to communicate with their customers. Sudheesh Nair, CEO of ThoughSpot, said that private companies will attempt to sell themselves as AI companies in a bid to capture VC dollars, regardless of what they actually offer. Companies will need to continue to invest in infrastructure that can handle AI capabilities and a rash of APIs to connect data together to train and feed algorithms. Tom Buiocchi, CEO of ServiceChannel, said that "hyper-local" will be a trend for retail and services of all kinds as big retailers are shifting from the megastore to local outposts to fit into a community. Thusoo, CEO of Qubole, said that there will be a greater emphasis in 2020 on financial governance in the cloud as CTOs want to understand their cloud ROI and hold departments responsible for their cloud usage. Todd Olson, CEO of Pendo, said that product usage metrics will become bellwethers for the most highly-valued companies. Lastly, Brett Caine, CEO of Airship, said that marketers will double-down on experimentation across customer engagement channels and digital properties, unleashing bold moves in controlled steps.
