Ecommerce (890 hits)

As people are becoming more dependent on technology, the popularity of ecommerce has been rising. Ecommerce, known as electronic commerce or internet commerce, is the buying and selling of goods and services through the internet with fast and easy transfer of money. It is different from e-business which is all aspects of online businesses because it focuses on goods and services.

The first ecommerce transaction happened in 1994 when Pizza Hut started selling pizzas online in late August. Pizza Hut does get credit for making the first transaction, but most of the credit goes to Dan Kohn. Dan Kohn was a 21 year old entrepreneur that had a website called NetMarket. On August 11, 1994, Kohn sold a CD of String’s Ten Summoner’s Tales for $12.48 plus shipping. It was sold to a friend in Philadelphia and for the first time ever, a transaction was protected by encryption technology.

Ever since, ecommerce has become more and more popular because it made it easier to discover and purchase products through the web. As opposed to traditional shopping, customers are able to see the variety of products right on their screen rather than having to go in stores and looking for the products. It helps saves time and sometimes money for consumers. Independent freelancers small businesses, and large corporations have all benefited from this because it allows them to make their products and services more accessible and be sold at a larger scale.

The popularity of ecommerce can be seen with online shopping websites such as Amazon and Ebay. On these websites, individual sellers and businesses are able to sell their products online. Although Amazon started off with very humble beginnings, it is now the largest online ecommerce retailers and one of the most popular companies in the world.

It is important that current and new businesses make their products and services accessible on the web. Some people prefer to shop online because it saves time and it is important for businesses to cater to all potential consumers. Expanding your products and services online will help find new customers, and it makes it easier to old customers to reorder a product or service.
